Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility Study

WHAT IS A GAUGE R&R STUDY

The gauging system has a critical impact on the performance of the product shipped to the customer. If the gauge accepts non conforming product, then the customer is directly impacted. If the gauge is rejecting good product, then this adds unnecessary cost to the business.  A gauge R&R study is an effective methodology to calculate gauge variation. It calculates the % of variation that the gauging system is contributing to the overall process variation. For example, if the Gauge R&R result is 5%, then 5% of the process variation is due to the gauge. If this figure is greater than 10%, then the gauge is not fit for its purpose and requires investigation. Two components of variation, Repeatability and Reproducibility, are quantified. Repeatability is a study of the variation from the gauge itself; using the same gauge, same part, same operator . . . does the gauge exhibit the same result? Reproducibility is the study of the impact of the operator within the measurement system variation. Using the same gauge, same parts, but different operators . . . does the gauge exhibit the same results? A Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility study provides a quantitative measure for determining whether a measurement system is adequate to measure the feature of interest.

PROGRAM AIM

The aim of this program is to provide the knowledge and skills to conduct a measurement system study for both attribute and variable data per AIAG guidelines. It enables the learner to quantify numerically the precision of a measurement system, interpret the results and present findings cohesively.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is aimed at personnel who are responsible for improving processes in a cost effective manner. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Engineers & Technicians: Process, Manufacturing, Validation, Quality, Laboratory, HSE
  • Metrology\Calibration Personnel
  • Leaders/Managers overseeing people who use measurement system analysis
  • Six Sigma Greenbelt/Blackbelt candidates

PRE REQUISITES     This course assumes no/little prior experience of Gauge R&R Studies

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, for both attribute and variable data, you will be able to:

1. Conduct a gauge R&R study using supplied procedure

2. Use software to analyse a gauge R&R study

3. Interpret results from a gauge R&R study and determine the adequacy of the measurement system.
4. Effectively present the gauge study performance

PROGRAM SYLLABUS

Session 7 Assessment of Learning

ASSESSMENT

On completion of training, trainees will complete a short multiple choice exam.

SOFTWARE

Minitab and Excel are two software packages available that complete the computation of gauge performance in the form of a gauge R&R study. This course offers training using Minitab, with no prior experience required. In the event that you have a preference for Excel, please specify in your application form, and your needs will be addressed during training. Both laptops and licensed software are supplied by Crystal Business Solutions on the training day. Candidates who wish to utilise their own personal laptops with licenced software are welcome to do so. Further information on Minitab can be found at the following website:

ABOUT THE TRAINER

The trainer for this course is Maria Ryan, who is a certified Six Sigma Blackbelt and Level 6 FETAC certified trainer. Maria has 15 years industrial experience within the Aerospace, Chemical, Medical Device and Pharmaceutical environments. Within these industries, she has worked in varying roles including Design and Manufacturing Engineer, Six Sigma Blackbelt, Continuous Improvement Manager, Quality Manager and Process Excellence Leader. On completion of training, trainees are motivated to apply learning on return to the workplace. This is achieved through practical application of tools coupled with Maria’s high energy and passion for superior performance.
