Regression: Linear and Multiple Linear Regression
WHAT IS A REGRESSION
Regression is a method of modelling the relationship between a process output and its inputs. If for example you make cameras and
customers are not satisfied with the time between flashes, then it is possible to model this relationship with say one input, battery voltage.
With linear regression, it is possible to generate an equation that represents the relationship between this input and output. An example of this equation is Flash Recovery Time = 9.66 – 3.57 Volts. From this equation, it is then possible to minimise flash time by optimising voltage. Regression also provides co-efficients that explain how much of the variation in the output is explained by the equation.
The larger this value, the better the equation. In this example, a co-efficient of 21% implies that this equation explains 21% of the variation between flash times. This is a powerful statistic that then directs the user to determine other sources
of variation, possibly building a multiple linear equation.
PROGRAM AIM
The aim of this program is to provide the knowledge and skills to conduct a regression analysis for variable data. It enables the learner to quantify the relationship between two or more inputs to a process output and determine the percentage of variation explained by the resulting equation.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is aimed at personnel who are responsible for developing and improving processes in a cost effective manner. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Engineers & Technicians: Process, Manufacturing, Validation, Quality, Laboratory, HSE
- Metrology\Calibration Personnel
- Leaders/Managers overseeing people who use measurement system analysis
- Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt candidates
PRE REQUISITES This course assumes no/little prior experience of regression analysis. An understanding of scatter plots and linear equations would be beneficial.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, for both attribute and variable data, you will be able to:
1. Define key terms of regression including residuals, R-Squared (R-sq), R-Squared Adjusted (R-sq adj), correlation (r) and p values
2. Use Minitab to generate both linear and multiple linear regressions
3. Interpret results from the regression analysis and determine relationship between process inputs and outputs.

SOFTWARE
Minitab and Excel are the two software packages available that complete the computation of gauge performance in the form of a gauge R&R study. This course offers training using Minitab, with no prior experience required. In the event that you have a preference for Excel, please specify in your application form, and your needs will be addressed during training. Both laptops and licensed software are supplied by Crystal Business Solutions on the training day. Candidates who wish to utilise their own personal laptops with licensed software are welcome to do so. Further information on Minitab can be found at the following website:

ABOUT THE TRAINER
The trainer for this course is Maria Ryan, who is a certified Six Sigma Blackbelt and Level 6 FETAC certified trainer. Maria has 15 years industrial experience within the Aerospace, Chemical, Medical Device and Pharmaceutical environments. Within these industries, she has worked in varying roles including Design and Manufacturing Engineer, Six Sigma Blackbelt, Continuous Improvement Manager, Quality Manager and Process Excellence Leader. On completion of training, trainees are motivated to apply learning on return to the workplace. This is achieved through practical application of tools coupled with Maria’s high energy and passion for superior performance.
